Pullulan Capsules: Quality, Naturally

Neil Goffart

 Image

Are you choosing natural food supplements for your health? Beyond the composition of what is inside your capsules, don't forget to check the shell as well! There are indeed several kinds of packaging for your capsules: plant-based, animal-based, with or without chemical solvents, and so on. The pullulan capsule is a healthy, clean choice, for a completely natural and plant-based intake of the nutrients you need to stay in good health. We explain what a pullulan capsule is, why you should choose this dosage form, and how it differs from the other capsules on the market.

What is a pullulan capsule?

The Pullulan capsule is a capsule that is 100% natural and plant-based. It is taken orally. It is made from a polysaccharide obtained by fermenting tapioca or maize. This fermentation is carried out by Aureobasidium pullulans, a fungal species from the black yeast family. It is thanks to this particular composition that the pullulan capsule is clean: its manufacture requires no chemical excipients, no GMOs and no nanoparticles. The pullulan capsule therefore contains no toxic substances, and using it is entirely harmless. It is thus 100% plant-based and suitable for vegans and vegetarians. These plant-based capsules are also free from lactose and gluten.

Why choose these 100% plant-based capsules?

The pullulan capsule is admittedly 100% plant-based, but it also has properties that make it ideal for packaging food supplements. Here are the reasons why more and more parapharmaceutical laboratories are choosing this packaging for their vitamins and minerals. That includes us: at LEPIVITS, we have chosen this dosage form to develop "clean" food supplements.

  • They are gluten-free and lactose-free: they are also suitable for people with intolerances;
  • They contain no substances of animal origin: they are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and they are halal and kosher;
  • They are non-allergenic;
  • They provide an excellent barrier against oxygen, which effectively protects the active ingredients they contain from oxidation;
  • They give products a longer shelf life;
  • They are non-toxic: no nanoparticles, no heavy metals, no chemical excipients, no solvents and no GMOs.

Pullulan capsules provide a good barrier against oxygen, which makes them slightly gastro-resistant. The active substances they contain are well preserved, allowing them to be better absorbed by the body.

The pullulan capsule versus other capsules

Pullulan capsules offer many advantages over capsules made from gelatine, or over other plant-based capsules.

The advantages of pullulan over other plant-based capsules

Pullulan capsules are not the only plant-based capsules on the market. There are also HPMC capsules. Although these capsules have a shell of plant origin, they are mainly obtained from cellulose and involve chemical solvents. HPMC stands for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, more commonly known as hypromellose. Yet, to achieve proper gelling of the HPMC plant-based shell, it is essential to use chemical additives or solvents known as E464. HPMC capsules are indeed plant-based, but that does not make them clean. Using pullulan capsules is healthier and more natural, which guarantees consumers that they are not consuming chemical solvents. What is more, pullulan provides an oxygen barrier that is 250 times greater than that of the HPMC capsule. As a result, the nutrients and trace elements contained in a pullulan capsule are better absorbed by the body, and their shelf life is longer than that of those contained in a hypromellose capsule. For food supplements to be highly effective, pullulan capsules are therefore recommended.

There are also plant-based gastro-resistant capsules. These capsules are of interest because they offer good pH resistance. They do, however, have the same drawback as HPMC: their production requires the use of chemical solvents.

The advantages of pullulan over animal-based capsules

There are also capsules made from animal gelatine. These capsules provide a very good barrier against oxygen, but they have the drawback of not being suitable for everyone. The gelatine used to make the shell of these capsules is in fact obtained from pork, beef or fish. They are not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, nor for people following a kosher or halal diet. The major advantage of these animal-based capsules is their low manufacturing cost. The pullulan capsule releases active ingredients in the gastrointestinal tract in a way similar to capsules made from animal gelatine, and it is suitable for everyone!

Capsules recognised for their quality

Pullulan capsules are recognised worldwide for their quality and their non-toxicity:

  • Japan's Ministry of Health has recognised pullulan capsules since 1996;
  • The United States and Canada recognise the pullulan capsule as non-harmful;
  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognises the use of pullulan as posing no risk to health;
  • UFC Que Choisir, the federal consumer union in France, ranks pullulan as an acceptable food additive. (1)

Opting for pullulan capsules means making a healthy and clean choice, for a completely natural and plant-based intake of the nutrients you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pullulan capsule?

A pullulan capsule is a plant-based shell used to encapsulate food supplements. It is made from pullulan, a polysaccharide obtained through fermentation, notably from tapioca or corn.

Are pullulan capsules plant-based and suitable for vegans?

Yes. Pullulan capsules do not contain animal-derived gelatin and are therefore suitable for people looking for food supplements in plant-based capsule form.

What is the difference between a pullulan capsule and an HPMC capsule?

keyboard_arrow_down

Both are plant-based capsules, but their composition differs. Pullulan is obtained through a fermentation process, whereas HPMC, or hypromellose, is a cellulose derivative.

What is the difference between a pullulan capsule and a gelatin capsule?

keyboard_arrow_down

Gelatin capsules are made from materials of animal origin, particularly pork, beef or fish. Pullulan, by contrast, is a plant-based alternative that is particularly suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Why use pullulan capsules for food supplements?

keyboard_arrow_down
add remove

Pullulan notably provides a good barrier against oxygen. This property helps better protect the substances contained in the capsule from oxygen exposure during storage.

Do LEPIVITS pullulan capsules contain gluten or lactose?

Our pullulan capsules are free from gluten and lactose, making them suitable for people who wish to avoid these substances.
