Osteovits is a nutritional supplement formulated for the maintenance of normal bone structure. Selected citrate minerals (bioavailable alkaline salts) such as calcium, magnesium and zinc, help to combat metabolic acidosis leading to bone demineralisation and low-grade inflammation.
Zinc is involved, among other things, in the synthesis of osteoblasts forming the bone matrix; magnesium slows down the rise in PTH (parathormone) in the event of stress (bone decalcification). A large proportion of the total magnesium is found in the bone (60%) and helps to modulate the formation of hydroxyapatite crystals. Magnesium regulates calcium transport and improves its binding [1]. Bone mineral density is dependent on calcium. Vitamins D and K optimise the formula by fixing calcium in the bone matrix.
Calcitriol also plays an important role in osteoblast differentiation and in the regulation of osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activity [2]. Vitamin K activates the carboxylation of osteocalcin, allowing this protein to bind calcium to the bone framework and prevent peripheral calcification [3-4-5]. According to numerous studies, the menaquinone form (MK-7) is involved in reducing the risk of fracture in osteopenia [6-7].
Vitamin B6 catalyses lysyl oxidase, which facilitates the binding of collagen and protein fibres in the bone structure.
Finally, vitamin C is involved in the production of hydroxyproline (hydroxylation of proline) which is an integral part of endogenous collagen. According to this study[8] aimed at improving the organic composition of bone, vitamin supplementation (C and B6), combined with calcium supplementation, prevented bone loss in osteopenic subjects. Vitamin C participates with vitamins D and K in protecting bone and muscle tissue from inflammation.
