Arginine is a powerful natural vasodilator for your arteries!

Arginine is a precursor of nitric oxide and plays an important role in the elasticity of the arteries.

  • Arginine

Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid. It is an active precursor in the synthesis of urea, proline, creatine and nitric oxide. Arginine is mainly involved in the immune system, wound healing, haemostasis and the secretion of growth hormone. The nitric oxide formed will allow the blood vessels to dilate, relaxing the smooth muscles surrounding them and decreasing the blood flow (*1).

Arginine is also involved in capillary growth. The nitric oxide formed opens the potassium channels in the cells, improving the irrigation of the hair roots and can therefore stimulate hair growth (*2).

Why vasodilate?

The blood flowing through our arteries distributes oxygen, glucose, micronutrients and hormonal messages to the body's organs, without which we could not function. However, these blood vessels can be narrowed or thickened by atheromatous processes or clogged with platelets. This usually leads to inflammation, cardiovascular problems and other conditions.

In the case of high blood pressure, taking 5g of arginine has a pharmacological antihypertensive effect. Arginine administration reduces blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), platelet aggregation, blood viscosity and blood flow in the leg arteries(*3).

Arginine is involved in energy production (*4)

Arginine is the precursor of creatine (magnesium-dependent phosphorylation reaction). Creatine is then able to restore ATP-rich bonds (energy) during intense effort. Arginine is also the precursor of a signal that will stimulate the proliferation of our energy plants (mitochondria). Finally, it is a precursor of agmatine which protects our mitochondria.

Cardioprotective role of arginine (*5)

  • Antioxidant
  • Protector of endothelial function
  • Vasodilator
  • Antihypertensive

Arginine in weight loss and immunity (*6)

This amino acid inhibits the absorption of saturated fats (bad fats). In fact, the lysine/arginine ratio determines the absorption of fats in our body. It helps to fight against overweight and metabolic syndrome, which is amplified by stress. Finally, arginine is anabolic of muscle mass by producing polyamines. The latter are anabolic factors in tissue repair (muscles, cardiovascular system, etc.) and play a role in supporting the immune system.

Arginine and stress (*7)

L-arginine is an inhibitor of the second messenger of stress; cortisol. In synergy with magnesium, arginine inhibits cortisol (2nd stress messenger) and magnesium inhibits noradrenalin (1st stress messenger).
